How we approach skill building

We start with nervous systems, not checklists. Together, we map out what’s actually hard day-to-day — getting out the door, managing overwhelm, cooking, using public transport, handling phone calls, study, work expectations, or just being around other people.

From there we co-design a plan built around the person’s interests, sensory profile, and executive function style. Sessions happen in-context (home, community, online, or at our Bucketty property) and are delivered by ND support workers, mentors, and clinicians who understand shutdowns, burnout, and demand-avoidance.

You can book:

  • 1:1 skill sessions (support worker or mentor)
  • ND mentoring / peer support
  • Short blocks (e.g. 8–12 weeks) targeting a specific goal area

Not sure where to start?

We can meet once, map out current challenges and goals, and suggest a staged approach to supports (1:1, groups, or a mix).

ND-led. Child-safe. Lived experience at every level of delivery.

Key Skill Pathways

Daily Living & Independence

Real-world practice with everyday tasks, broken into doable steps.

  • Home & personal care
  • Routines & planning
  • Food & money management

We support people to build sustainable routines around mornings, evenings, meals, cleaning, and personal care without shame or pressure. Sessions might look like making a visual schedule, doing tasks together with lots of scaffolding, or setting up the environment so things feel easier.

Emotional Regulation & Interoception

Understanding body signals, stress responses, and shutdowns.

  • Interoception mapping
  • Low-demand approaches
  • Meltdown/shutdown planning

Using gentle, non-clinical language, we help people notice patterns in their nervous system, identify early signs of overwhelm, and experiment with regulation strategies that actually work for them — movement, deep pressure, quiet time, stimming, or sensory tools.

Social Confidence & Community Participation

Connection without scripts, masking, or forced eye contact.

  • 1:1 or small group
  • Interest-based
  • Community access

Supports may include graded exposure to community spaces, practising advocacy phrases, navigating group settings (including our own programs), and building safe social routines around hobbies, clubs, or volunteering.

Executive Function, Study & Work Skills

Support for initiation, follow-through, and managing expectations.

  • Study support
  • Workplace prep
  • Task breakdown

We help with things like setting up study systems, planning assignments, getting to TAFE, managing emails and phone calls, or preparing for job interviews. The focus is on building scaffolds that match the person’s brain, not trying to “fix” motivation.

Communication & Self-Advocacy

Finding words, scripts, or alternatives that feel safe and authentic.

  • Script building
  • Supported communication
  • Boundaries

This might include building email or message templates, practising how to say “no”, explaining access needs to school or work, or using visuals and tech to support alternative communication styles.

Aged Care & Life Transitions

Support for older neurodivergent people and big life changes.

  • ND & aged care aware
  • Home & community
  • Graded change

For older people (or carers) we can focus on staying at home safely, navigating aged care systems, building routines around mobility and health changes, and maintaining social connection in a way that respects sensory needs and energy levels.
